Tanzania’s main opposition party CHADEMA now wants President Samia Suluhu to vacate power over what it claims is a fraudulent win in the October 29 general election.

The party claims the election was a fraud whose results cannot be believed in, because other players, including the party itself, were locked out and prevented from participating.

It has alleged that Samia and her CCM party succeeded in their rigging plot by enforcing a media shutdown that controlled what gets out, making it hard for the public to follow up and detect what was going on.

The party states that for this reason, the election results must be nullified and fresh elections organised, under a transition government not led by Samia or any member of her CCM party.

CHADEMA says it would rather Tanzania is governed by the UN, AU or SADC until the fresh elections are held.

“The election was fraudulent and it’s results must be nullified because there were serious cases of democratic violations. The electoral agency must also be dissolved because it lacks the independence it claims to have,” the party said in a statement on Thursday.

It termed Samia an Illegitimate President who doesn’t have the backing of the people and who is now dependent on the help of the armed forces for forceful leadership.

“AUEOM, SADC EOM and EAC EOM, in their reports, have all concurred that the election was not free and fair, reinforcing our position that there is need for serious constitutional changes.”

Throughout the statement, the party has also avoided refering to Samia as President, in an apparent bid to solidify it’s stand that it doesn’t believe in her legitimacy.
