A tragic incident took place at Lake Basin Mall in Kisumu after a businessman allegedly took his own life by jumping from the second floor of the building.

The man, whose identity is yet to be revealed, is said to have been facing financial distress after reportedly being billed Ksh 300 million by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

According to witnesses, the man arrived at the mall in a white Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and calmly handed over his car keys to a security guard before walking into the building. Moments later, he was seen plunging from the second floor, landing near the main entrance.

Panic quickly spread as onlookers screamed for help, with some rushing to alert the police and emergency responders.

Security officers immediately sealed off the area as medics tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was later moved to the mortuary for autopsy and identification.

Sources indicate that the man had been under immense stress over a tax dispute with KRA, which allegedly demanded a staggering Ksh 300 million in back taxes.

Police have launched investigations into the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage from the mall to piece together the final moments before the tragedy.

Kisumu County Police Commander said officers are working with the family and KRA officials to verify the claims surrounding the tax bill.
