Matinagi and Ruto

President William Ruto’s rally in Nairobi’s Mukuru kwa Njenga slums took an unexpected turn on Monday when residents interrupted his address with loud chants of “kumi bila break” a Swahili phrase loosely translating to “ten years without a break,” commonly interpreted as a demand for Ruto to serve two full presidential terms.

The chant, however, appeared to carry mixed messages. While some supporters echoed the slogan to express loyalty and optimism for continued leadership, others used it mockingly to question the delivery of promises made during Ruto’s first term.

The interruption came just moments after the President had started outlining his government’s development plans for informal settlements. The crowd, initially calm, broke into synchronized chants that momentarily overpowered the sound system.

Security personnel and local organizers moved quickly to calm the situation, allowing the rally to proceed, albeit under a more watchful atmosphere.

Sources close to the Kenya Kwanza campaign suggested the chant may have been a spontaneous show of support. Still, observers noted that the mixed tone of the crowd could point to growing frustrations among Nairobi’s urban poor over high living costs, unemployment, and delayed infrastructure projects.

Ruto, maintaining composure, responded to the chant with a smile, stating: “Kazi bado inaendelea. Na ikiwa mnataka kumi bila break, lazima tuonyeshe kazi bila break” (“The work is ongoing. And if you want ten years without a break, then we must show work without a break”).

Analysts say the incident reflects the shifting political dynamics in urban strongholds, where youthful voters are becoming increasingly vocal and demanding accountability.

The President’s visit to Mukuru was part of his ongoing countrywide tour to drum up support for the housing agenda and assess grassroots implementation of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Whether the “kumi bila break” chant was a genuine endorsement or a sarcastic jab remains up for debate but it undeniably captured national attention and set the tone for the coming political season.
