President William Samoei Arap Ruto’s administration has been closely linked to a plan by the Communication Authority of Kenya, CA to install a tracking device on mobile phone networks that risks opening up Kenyans to mass surveillance.

This comes as the Communication Authority of Kenya has moved to Court seeking orders to drop petitions to block the rollout of DMS amid serious concerns that it may infringe on the customer data, including calls, messages and financial transactions.

The law Society of Kenya, LSK are among the two civil organizations that have gone to the Supreme Court after the CA was allowed by the Court of Appeal to go ahead with installation of the gadget on condition that involved the public in the process.

The Law Society of Kenya argues that the DMS will not only be collecting mobile data but also offer the ability of cross-referencing that data with personal data held in other government databases.
