President William Ruto has made a big change at the Communications Authority (CA) by naming Charles Kamau Karondo as the new Chairperson.
This was announced on April 14, 2026 through an official government notice. The notice also said that Mary Wambui Mungai, known as “Wambui wa Ruto,” will no longer hold the position.
Charles Karondo will lead the Communications Authority for the next three years. The CA is very important because it controls communication services like mobile phones, internet, and broadcasting across Kenya.
It also helps keep Kenya’s digital systems safe from cyber threats and supports online business growth.
Karondo is not new to leadership roles. He once worked as a personal assistant to Ndindi Nyoro, the Member of Parliament for Kiharu.
Karondo joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and played a role during the 2022 elections when William Ruto became president.
In 2022, he became the chairperson of the Athi Water Works Agency, becoming one of Kenya’s youngest people to lead a government agency.
Mary Wambui, a well-known businesswoman and supporter of President Ruto, had been the CA Chairperson since December 2022. She replaced Gilbert Kibe, who retired.
Wambui’s appointment had caused talk because she was facing a big tax evasion case involving 2.2 billion shillings.
The Kenya Revenue Authority claimed she did not pay taxes on her company’s income from 2014 to 2019. However, in early 2023, the tax case was dropped by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Now, with Charles Karondo in charge, the Communications Authority will continue to manage licenses for communication services and promote fair competition in the sector.
They will also work on strengthening cyber security and helping e-commerce grow.
While the government has not explained why Mary Wambui was removed, this change shows that President Ruto is making moves to bring in new leaders at important government bodies.
