Mr Ruto

A speech by William Ruto at Luiss University in Rome was abruptly interrupted after a sudden power blackout struck the auditorium, momentarily halting proceedings and drawing mixed reactions from the audience.

The incident occurred just minutes into President Ruto’s address, where he was expected to speak on Africa’s economic transformation and Kenya’s development agenda. As he delved into his remarks, the lights flickered before going off completely, plunging the hall into darkness and forcing organizers to pause the event.

For several minutes, confusion filled the room as technical teams rushed to restore power. Attendees, including students, faculty, and invited guests, remained seated while some used their mobile phone flashlights to illuminate the space. Despite the disruption, the atmosphere remained calm, with occasional murmurs and light laughter breaking the tension.

President Ruto, maintaining composure, briefly stepped back from the podium as organizers worked to resolve the issue. Once power was restored, he returned to the stage and resumed his speech, even making a light-hearted remark about the unexpected interruption, which drew applause from the audience.

The blackout, though short-lived, sparked conversations online, with some Kenyans humorously linking the incident to the frequent power outages experienced back home. Others, however, praised the President for handling the situation with calmness and continuing his address without further incident.

Officials at Luiss University later attributed the outage to a technical fault, assuring attendees that measures were being taken to prevent a recurrence.

The event was part of President Ruto’s official visit to Italy, aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Kenya and European partners. Despite the interruption, the remainder of the session proceeded smoothly, with Ruto engaging the audience in a question-and-answer segment focused on governance, innovation, and youth empowerment.
