President William Ruto has told Kenyans to back their criticism of the new police uniforms with facts and evidence rather than opinions. He made the remarks amid growing public debate over the recently unveiled outfits for general duty officers.
Speaking on Friday at the National Police College in Embakasi Nairobi the Head of State said the uniform change should not be seen in isolation. He described it as part of a wider transformation plan for the National Police Service.
Ruto explained that the uniform was designed after wide consultations with officers and members of the public. He said the design considered professional identity operational needs and the dignity of police personnel.
He stated that a uniform alone cannot transform policing but noted that pride and identity matter in building a disciplined and effective force. The President said the broader reforms also touch on pay welfare housing training equipment and technology.
While acknowledging public concerns Ruto insisted the changes fall under his administration’s larger police reform agenda. He said Kenyans have every right to question government decisions and spending tied to the reforms.
According to him the entire programme is funded by public money and must therefore withstand scrutiny. He added that accountability is a constitutional duty that should always rest on facts and truth.
Ruto said the true measure of the reforms will be how officers perform their duties. He mentioned quick response to calls fair enforcement of the law protection of vulnerable persons and equal treatment of all citizens as key markers of success.
His comments come as many Kenyans continue to question the cost of the uniform tender. Critics argue the funds could have been directed toward police welfare instead.
Others have mocked the new outfits online calling them poorly designed. Some claim the sky blue and dark blue shades closely resemble uniforms worn by Kenya Power technicians rather than a modern police look.
