Ruto Appointments

President William Ruto has announced fresh appointments to two government institutions, naming former Cabinet Minister Njeru Peter Ndwiga and former Bura MP Ali Wario to senior leadership positions for three-year terms.

The appointments were confirmed through separate notices published in the Kenya Gazette, with both positions taking effect on October 30, 2026.

The latest changes bring two experienced former politicians into leadership roles at institutions responsible for important aspects of Kenya’s agricultural and population development sectors.

In the first appointment, President Ruto named Ndwiga as the new non-executive chairperson of the Coffee Board of Kenya.

According to Gazette Notice No. 16957, Ndwiga will serve a three-year term under the Coffee Act, 2026. His appointment also replaces an earlier appointment published in the Kenya Gazette.

Ndwiga brings considerable experience in politics, agriculture and cooperative development to the position. He previously served as Cabinet Minister for Cooperative Development and Marketing under former President Mwai Kibaki between 2002 and 2007.

His experience in the cooperative sector is considered relevant to the responsibilities of the Coffee Board, particularly given the importance of cooperatives in supporting farmers and organising agricultural production.

He later joined the Senate, where he represented Embu County from 2017 to 2022 after winning the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.

During his time in the Senate, Ndwiga chaired the Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, where he was involved in matters relating to the country’s agricultural industry.

He also holds a bachelor’s degree in cooperatives and community development from the Cooperative University of Kenya.

Meanwhile, President Ruto appointed former Bura Constituency MP Ali Wario as the new non-executive chairperson of the Kenya National Council for Population and Development.

The appointment was published under Gazette Notice No. 16956 and also provides for a three-year term beginning October 30, 2026.

Wario previously represented Bura Constituency in the National Assembly for two terms. He also served as Assistant Minister for Home Affairs between 2003 and 2006.

His appointment places him at the head of an institution involved in population and development matters, including supporting policies and programmes that address demographic trends and their relationship with national development.

Both appointments were formally confirmed through notices signed by President Ruto in his capacity as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces.

The latest decisions form part of the government’s ongoing process of appointing individuals to leadership positions across public institutions.

With Ndwiga taking charge of the Coffee Board of Kenya and Wario assuming leadership of the Kenya National Council for Population and Development, attention will now turn to how the two former lawmakers approach their new responsibilities over the next three years.
