Tension and grief rocked the Emanwa location in Nyamache, Kisii County, after a brutal family tragedy claimed two lives.
Police said the incident happened when 32-year-old Enock Obwaya attacked his father, James Ongige Obwaya, aged 80, following a quarrel at their homestead.Witnesses said Enock struck his father several times on the head with a club.
His mother’s cries for help went unanswered as the elderly pastor collapsed with deep wounds.
Alarmed villagers tried to rescue the victim and rush him to hospital, but Enock reportedly armed himself with a panga and threatened to harm anyone who came near.
Out of fear, neighbours abandoned the rescue attempt. The man bled to death outside his gate that night.
When word of the killing spread the next morning, villagers launched a manhunt.
Enock, who had attempted to escape to a nearby village, was caught by the angry mob, beaten, and set ablaze.Police later arrived and moved both bodies to the mortuary.
Investigations revealed that Enock had been freed on bail just two days earlier after facing assault charges at Ogembo Law Courts.
His father had been a key witness in that case, and officers believe the attack was fuelled by bitterness over the matter.
Residents described the family feud as long-standing and expressed shock at the violent outcome.
Authorities have since raised concern over rising cases of domestic killings and mob justice in Kisii, warning that such incidents erode trust in the justice system.
