Police in Kirinyaga have arrested a man accused of assaulting the son of a senior chief, ending a five-year wait for justice. The arrest comes just weeks after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen intervened in the matter following a public plea by the chief.
The suspect, identified as James Kamau Gachoki, was cornered on Sunday in Karigo-ini village, Murang’a County, where he had been hiding. He was later transferred to Kianyaga Police Station and is expected to appear in court on Monday. His capture marks a breakthrough in a case that had dragged on for years with little progress.
The incident dates back to 2020 when the son of Njukiini North Location Chief, Dickson Kathuri Mugo, was allegedly abused. Despite repeated attempts to seek help from the police, the chief was left frustrated as the case stalled with no meaningful action taken.
The matter came to light again two weeks ago during a Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Kerugoya. Chief Mugo, visibly emotional, told CS Murkomen about the struggles his family had endured as the case remained unresolved. He revealed how the ordeal deeply affected his son, now 18 years old, and tore apart his family, as his wife left after the traumatic experience.
Murkomen directed detectives to reopen investigations, promising that justice would no longer be delayed. His directive appears to have renewed momentum, leading to the swift arrest of the suspect.
