The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, led by Raila Odinga, has demanded justice following the death of blogger and activist Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.
In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, ODM condemned what they called “growing police brutality” and accused the police of targeting innocent Kenyans. The party said the killing of Ojwang was not only shocking but also unacceptable in a country that claims to uphold the rule of law.
“Ojwang was a peaceful young man who used his voice to speak for the voiceless,” the statement read. “His arrest and death under the hands of the police is a painful reminder of the deep-rooted problems within our security system.”
ODM said the incident had exposed the failure of the government to protect the lives of its citizens despite the promise of unity and reform under the broad-based Kenya Kwanza administration.
“They told us this was a broad-based government. But what we are seeing is bloodshed. The same security agencies meant to protect us are killing our young people,” said a top ODM official.
The party called for a full and independent investigation into the circumstances that led to Ojwang’s arrest and death. They also demanded that those responsible be brought to justice without delay.
ODM further warned that the continued killing of youth and activists would not be tolerated, adding that they would not remain silent as Kenyans are murdered “like animals.”
The party’s message comes at a time when anger and frustration are rising across the country. The death of Ojwang has sparked protests and online campaigns, especially among Gen Z, who have vowed to keep speaking out.
Human rights groups and religious leaders have joined in the calls for justice, urging the government to take immediate action and restore public trust.
As Kenyans continue to demand answers, ODM has assured the family of Albert Ojwang of their full support and promised to stand by all those fighting for justice and truth.
