Fresh concerns about the safety of Kenyan leaders have emerged after questions were raised about an aircraft reportedly used to fly Senator Edwin Sifuna to Kitui.

The concerns are linked to the history of a Kenyan-registered Cessna 208B Grand Caravan with registration 5Y-LJM, which was involved in a runway excursion at Bunia Airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo on July 27, 2025.

According to the Aviation Safety Network, the aircraft veered off the runway while landing at Bunia Airport. It had two people on board, and there were no reported fatalities or injuries. However, the aircraft suffered substantial damage, including damage to the outer section of its left wing and a bent and dislodged nose landing gear.

Initial reports from aviation sources indicated that a possible problem with the aircraft’s braking system may have contributed to the incident. A report from the Democratic Republic of Congo said the aircraft was operating a ferry flight and had only crew members on board at the time. The crew reportedly escaped without injuries.

The incident has now become a subject of public concern because of claims that the same aircraft was later used to transport Kenyan political leaders.

However, the available aviation records confirm the 2025 incident involving 5Y-LJM, but they do not independently establish that this was the aircraft that carried Sifuna to Kitui. That part of the claim therefore requires confirmation from the relevant aviation operator or authorities.

Sifuna has been active in Kitui and has previously addressed political gatherings in the county. In August 2025, he visited Kitui and spoke about political issues involving ODM and the Azimio coalition.

The latest concerns have nevertheless renewed calls for stronger safety checks whenever senior politicians and other public officials travel by air.

Security teams responsible for leaders’ movements are expected to consider more than just physical security. Aircraft records, maintenance history, pilot qualifications, weather conditions, flight routes and emergency arrangements are also important when planning official travel.
