Residents of Mathioya Constituency in Murang’a County staged overnight protests on Friday, August 14, following allegations that MP Edwin Mugo Gichuki was transporting outsiders into the area to register as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The demonstrations began in Kiriaini before spreading to the Mathioya NGCDF offices, where residents gathered, lit bonfires and burned tyres, temporarily disrupting transport.
Kiriaini boda boda chairman Madocho accused the MP of bringing about 500 people from Githurai in three buses to register as voters and support his re-election bid. Residents also accused him of failing to deliver on constituency projects and allegedly using development funds to support non-residents.
Other complaints included alleged delays in bursary payments to students at a Gitugi school and delays in constructing the Kiriko-Kora road.
Residents said they were dissatisfied with responses from officials at the NGCDF offices. The MP had not responded to the allegations by the time of publication.
