After mobs set fire to several commercial properties in Dar es Salaam including Juma Jux’s shop, Billnass Electronics, and Shilole’s restaurant protesters are now reportedly threatening to burn down Diamond Platinumz’s home and the Wasafi Records complex. The fury stems from widespread belief among some citizens that Diamond and other artists accepted hefty payments from President Samia Suluhu to promote her candidacy, a move many view as a betrayal.
Sources close to the demonstrations say that the unrest is being directed specifically at celebrities who openly campaigned for Suluhu. Harmonize, Rayvanny, and Zuchu have been named among those on the protesters’ list. Insiders claim that top entertainers received very large payments to lend their support to the president a revelation that has intensified public outrage and fuelled calls for retribution.
Protest leaders have vowed to sustain the demonstrations, and some participants have issued stark warnings that, if the electoral commission proclaims Suluhu the winner, they will escalate their campaign to include widespread arson and destruction. Observers caution that the rhetoric and the recent attacks point to an increasingly volatile environment, where political grievances, allegations of bought endorsements, and popular anger toward high-profile figures could provoke further destructive actions unless tensions are addressed.
