As the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) advances into the knockout stages, Kenya’s national team faces a tricky test against a revitalized Madagascar side that has already proven their doubters wrong.

Madagascar booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso at Amaan International Stadium in Zanzibar on August 16, capping off a stunning turnaround in Group B.

Now, they turn their focus to Nairobi, where they will take on hosts Kenya this Friday in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.

Few would have predicted Madagascar’s progression after their shaky start in the group stage. A goalless draw against Mauritania was followed by a 2-1 defeat to co-hosts Tanzania, leaving them bottom of the table with a single point.

With their back against the wall, the Barea needed a win in their final group match and delivered under pressure, overcoming Burkina Faso with grit and resilience.

The win not only secured Madagascar’s passage to the quarter-finals but also sent a strong message: they are not to be underestimated.

Kenya, on the other hand, enjoyed a smoother journey to the last eight.

Bolstered by home support and consistent performances, the Harambee Stars topped their group and will now look to capitalize on their momentum and home advantage in Nairobi.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Kenya’s head coach emphasized the need for focus and discipline.

“Madagascar showed character to come through a tough group. We must respect that and prepare accordingly. This is knockout football—every mistake counts,” he said.

Fans can expect an intense battle as both sides eye a semi-final spot. For Kenya, the challenge will be to maintain composure under pressure.

For Madagascar, it’s about continuing the fight and proving they belong among the continent’s elite.

Kick-off is set for Friday evening at Nyayo National Stadium.
