President William Ruto has revealed that senior doctors from The Nairobi Hospital reached out to him before he ordered the prosecution of officials linked to alleged fraud at the facility.
Speaking on Tuesday, March 17, in Mount Elgon, the Head of State dismissed claims that he was trying to take over the hospital. He said his actions followed an appeal from medical professionals who wanted the institution protected.
Ruto said that as the patron of Nairobi Hospital, senior doctors and professionals approached him to save the hospital from people he described as conmen, fraudsters, and charlatans who wanted to take control of the institution.
The President stressed that the hospital is a key medical institution and must be protected from mismanagement.
He said he will not allow it to be taken hostage by people he described as fraudsters.
He added that he ordered those involved in fraudulent activities to be removed and taken to court.Ruto stated that Nairobi Hospital is a premier medical institution in Kenya and there was no way he would allow it to be taken over by fraudsters, adding that he had given clear instructions for those involved in fraudulent activities to be removed and charged in court.
The matter has already moved to court, with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions charging several officials.
Among them is Job Obwaka, accused of failing to submit financial records for two years.
Chris Bichange and Samson Mbuthia Kinyanjui also face charges linked to alleged financial benefits from an insurance deal.
The suspects were arrested on March 13 and spent the weekend in custody as investigations continue.
