The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert warning Kenyans to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall in many parts of the country.

The rains are expected to begin on Tuesday this week and continue until Monday next week.

In its weekly advisory released on Tuesday, October 21, the department noted that most regions would experience significant rainfall, with some areas likely to face isolated heavy downpours.

The Met Department cautioned that the rains could lead to localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas, and advised residents to take necessary precautions.

According to the report, the Central Highlands are among the regions expected to receive heavy rainfall. The affected counties include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Residents in these areas have been advised to watch out for slippery roads and possible disruptions to transport and daily activities.

The Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the Rift Valley are also set to experience similar weather conditions.

Counties likely to be affected include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi.

Additionally, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot counties will also receive significant rainfall during the same period.

In the South-Eastern Lowlands, the forecast indicates moderate to heavy rains in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties. Inland parts of Tana River County are also expected to experience wet conditions.

The department urged farmers to take advantage of the rains for planting but also advised caution to prevent crop damage from excessive moisture.

Motorists and pedestrians were reminded to remain vigilant on slippery roads, while those in flood-prone regions were warned to stay away from open water channels and avoid crossing flooded areas.
