The long wait is finally over. The 2026/27 English Premier League season begins today, Friday, August 21, with defending champions Arsenal starting their title defence against newly promoted Coventry City. After a long break caused in part by the 2026 World Cup, the English
Premier League has finally returned for the 2026/27 season. The campaign begins on Friday, August 21, with reigning champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal are entering the season with enormous expectations. They won the Premier League last season and are now trying to achieve something the club has never done in the modern Premier League era: win consecutive league titles.Manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear that retaining the trophy will require the same hunger, consistency and ambition that helped them become champions.
Their confidence has also been boosted by a 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield. However, that result does not guarantee anything in the league. Arsenal will have to perform consistently across 38 matches, deal with injuries and handle pressure from rivals.
The opening match against Coventry is particularly interesting because Coventry are back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years. For them, facing the defending champions in their first game is a huge challenge, but also an opportunity to announce themselves on the biggest stage.
