She was overwhelmingly elected as Murang’a County Women Representative in 2022 to succeed Sabina Chege who had served for two straight terms. But with the 2027 general election just around the corner, Betty Maina is facing the biggest test of her her political career.
In the Mount Kenya region where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is keen to stamp his authority going to the next general election, Maina is one of those who have openly defied the Democracy for Citizens Party leader.
The outspoken MP remains one of the key allies of President William Ruto in the restless Mount Kenya region. And unless something happens, it is most likely that the popular lawmaker will defend her seat on a UDA party ticket.
If this happens, she will face the DCP party wave that may end up sweeping across the Mount Kenya region in 2027.
Does Maina have what it takes to overcome the Gachagua wave and be reelected for a second straight term in office? Or will DCP sweep her aside and probably end her political career? Well, only time will tell.
