Security forces in Nakuru faced a major test today as protesters behind the SabaSaba2025 demonstrations switched tactics, breaking away from the expected city centre rallies and instead launching decentralized actions across multiple estates.
Rather than converge on the central business district, demonstrators spread out into neighborhoods like Kivumbini, Bondeni, and Lanet. The move left police thinly stretched, unable to anticipate or contain the simultaneous disruptions.
Burning barricades went up in parts of Kivumbini by mid-morning, halting traffic and forcing shops to shut down. In Bondeni, youth blocked feeder roads while calling for reforms. As soon as officers arrived at one hotspot, another flare-up would erupt elsewhere, pulling police resources in several directions.
Despite a heavy security presence around town, authorities struggled to keep pace. Tear gas was used in scattered instances, but officers often arrived after protesters had moved on.
