A police officer in Bomet County has found himself in serious trouble after an unexpected turn of events late at night.

The incident occurred while the officer was on his way home, and authorities say it resulted in the loss of his service weapon.

According to reports, he had been at the bar located at Kaptebeng’wet Centre in Konoin Sub‑County before the incident.

On leaving the bar late at night, the officer is alleged to have lost his gun which was reportedly loaded with bullets. He has since been arrested, and will be taken to court as an investigation is underway.

Loss of firearms by members of the National Police Service (NPS) in Kenya is treated with the utmost seriousness.

Under Kenya’s firearms laws and police standing orders, officers who lose guns may face criminal charges or disciplinary action. The law states that any person who has a firearm or ammunition must report loss or theft immediately to the officer in charge of the nearest police station failure to do so is an offence.

Moreover, the NPS has repeatedly warned that misuse of firearms, or careless handling by officers, will not be tolerated. With Kenya facing challenges over illegal arms proliferation and issues of accountability within security agencies, such incidents undermine public trust and weaken efforts to ensure safe weapon handling.

In this case, the officer’s arrest signals that authorities are treating the matter as more than a simple loss the fact that the lost gun was loaded with ammunition raises the stakes.

Investigators are now working to establish what exactly happened, why the firearm was not securely stored, and whether any rules under the NPS Standing Orders or the Firearms Act were breached.
