After weeks of intensive manhunt, police in Vihiga County finally arrested one of their own accused of murdering a fellow officer in cold blood.

Constable Kevin Omondi, who had been on the run for over two months, was apprehended in Luanda on Tuesday in connection with the brutal killing of Constable Nicholas Samoei on August 22, 2025.

According to police reports, Omondi was cornered by detectives after they received intelligence that he was hiding in a house within the area.

Late Samoei.

The incident dates back to a shocking night at Esirabe Primary School, where the two officers had been deployed to guard a store containing government-supplied fertilizer.

Investigators said Samoei’s body was discovered in a room adjacent to the store, shot once in the head at close range. Despite the single fatal shot, investigators recovered 26 spent cartridges near the scene.

Police confirmed that Omondi fled the scene immediately after the shooting, escaping with Samoei’s CZ rifle, which remains missing.

The motive behind the killing is still unclear, though officers suspect a dispute may have erupted while the two were on duty.

Law enforcement officials have launched a fresh operation to recover the missing firearm and piece together the full sequence of events that led to the murder. The suspect is currently in custody and will face murder and firearm-related charges as investigations continue.

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has unsettled the local community and authorities alike.
