A viral clip has revealed dramatic scenes at St. George’s Girls’ High School in Nairobi, where chaos erupted after a disagreement between students and teachers.
The footage shows dozens of school bags and beddings scattered outside the compound along the pavements, with reports indicating that the learners slept outside during the night protest.
The incident began when students asked to be allowed to watch the eclipse. They were given permission for a short while but were later instructed to return to their classrooms for evening studies.
Some refused, and the standoff grew worse when a teacher allegedly assaulted one of the students.
Angered by the incident, the girls went on strike, breaking the school gate and staging protests throughout the night. They are said to have made noise, chanted for justice, and refused to return to class.
The unrest forced parents, who received frantic calls from their daughters, to rush to the school in the middle of the night.
Police officers were deployed to control the situation but were reportedly overwhelmed by the students, who continued with their protests until morning.
Parents were later seen inside the compound trying to engage teachers and administrators to find a way forward.
Former nominated senator Gloria Orwoba, an alumna of the school, later shared details of what had transpired. She questioned how the situation was handled, saying there are better ways of engaging learners in modern times.
