A former athlete, Abraham Chelanga, is counting himself lucky to be alive after surviving a shocking incident along the Kapseret–Kimumu road in Eldoret on October 8, 2025.

According to reports, the ex-athlete was driving his Toyota Hilux single-cab pickup from his farm after completing a successful maize harvest when he was stopped by a traffic police officer, allegedly attached to Langas Police Station.

The officer reportedly entered Chelanga’s vehicle and insisted on accompanying him for reasons yet to be established.

During the journey, the officer is said to have demanded a bribe of KSh 10,000, which Chelanga declined to pay. The officer allegedly remained in the vehicle until they reached the Coca-Cola area, where he alighted.

Moments later, a civilian riding a Bodaboda, who had reportedly been trailing the vehicle closely, opened fire and shot at the car’s left rear tyre.

The gunshot caused Chelanga to briefly lose control of his vehicle, but he managed to steer it safely to a stop. He sustained a minor injury during the incident.

Eyewitnesses claim the shooter quickly collected the spent cartridges before fleeing the scene, raising suspicions about whether he was a police officer or a hired assailant.

The incident was reported at Eldoret Central Police Station, where investigations have been launched to establish the identities of those involved and the motive behind the attack.

Residents and close associates of Chelanga believe the incident was an attempted assassination and are calling for swift, impartial investigations to ensure justice is served.
