There was panic along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway after a passenger minibus burst into flames in the middle of the road.

The vehicle, which was carrying more than 40 passengers, had left Makutano market when the fire suddenly broke out.

According to reports, one passenger was transporting a sack of charcoal that may have contained hot embers. Strong winds are believed to have fanned the heat, causing the charcoal to ignite. Within minutes, flames spread quickly through the vehicle, forcing passengers to scramble for safety.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as everyone managed to escape before the fire intensified. Some travelers were seen standing by the roadside in shock as thick smoke and flames poured from the top of the bus.

Several good Samaritans and local residents attempted to put out the fire using water and sand, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Firefighters arrived swiftly at the scene and managed to contain the fire before it spread further.

Images and video footage captured dramatic scenes of thick black smoke billowing from the bus as onlookers watched from a distance. Traffic along the highway was temporarily disrupted as emergency crews worked to secure the area.

Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire.
