Months after the controversial death of Albert Ojwang in police custody, investigative officers are yet to provide a conclusive report. His family is still hoping for justice. Despite earlier assurances by the government regarding the safety of detainees in police cells, another Kenyan has sadly lost his life under similar circumstances.
Benard Cheruiyot Kigen, a 30-year-old man from Kimororoch village Kiptagich ward, Kuresoi south constituency, died while in custody at Keringet Police Station under controversial circumstances.
Kigen was arrested in Kiptagich on Friday over allegations of threatening to kill and was later booked at the station. According to the Occurrence Book at the station, as read to the media by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), he was found unconscious in his cell after allegedly hitting his head against the wall. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The OCS has distanced the police from any wrongdoing, maintaining that the injuries were self-inflicted. However, residents have disputed this account, alleging that Kigen may have been assaulted before or during his detention.
Cases of police brutality continue to rise in the country, with repeated promises of reform yet to be fully realized.
While speaking to TAACH FM, Area Member of Parliament Joseph Tonui has condemned the death and called for swift action from the Interior Ministry, urging authorities to ensure justice is served.
“I have learned of the seath of the young man with sadness in my heart, i want to send my condolences to the family. I want to ask the police officers heading the station to come out clearly and say what exactly transpired , it is shocking for a person to die inside a heavily protected area. We need answers on this , i want to ask the interior CS , Kipchumba Murkomen to ensure that those involved are arrested and charged accordingly ,” he said.
