Detectives investigating the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were have uncovered troubling financial links involving the late legislator’s security detail.
One suspect has revealed he was paid KSh 80,000 by the MP’s bodyguard to drop men near the murder scene, while others received a hefty KSh 850,000 as part of a down payment for the planned assassination.
The MP’s bodyguard, Allan Omondi, and his driver, Walter Owino, were arrested in Nairobi following a night-long operation.
Their arrests followed the capture of Dennis Sewe Munyasi, who unknowingly led investigators to another suspect, Edwin Oduor alias Abdi Rashid.
The suspects reportedly confessed to a well-orchestrated plan involving Were’s close protection team.
According to detectives, the KSh 850,000 transaction was part of the murder deal.
Some of the money was recovered at the residence of William Imoli, the first suspect arrested. Imoli claimed he received KSh 80,000 to facilitate transportation of the killers.
Following the revelations, police raided Omondi’s Uthiru home and seized mobile phones belonging to both him and the driver for forensic analysis.
Investigators are tracing the financial transactions and digital communications to determine the extent of the conspiracy.
In a dramatic turn, a senior government official has also been named a person of interest.
This aligns with the slain MP’s family’s concerns about a powerful mastermind and the suspicious survival of his bodyguard and driver during the shooting.
As the dragnet expands to Homa Bay County, five suspects are set to be arraigned, while the search continues for more involved in the high-profile murder.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations continues to call for public assistance in the ongoing probe.
