One person was reportedly shot dead during chaos at Kasarani Stadium, where thousands had gathered to view the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Tension rose as impatient mourners tried to force their way toward the main dais. Police responded by firing teargas to control the surging crowd. Some mourners hurled stones at officers, leading to running battles outside the stadium.
The incident happened shortly before President William Ruto and other leaders arrived for the viewing ceremony. Among those present were Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and several Cabinet Secretaries, including Kipchumba Murkomen.
The government had earlier changed the viewing venue from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani due to the large number of mourners. Security was immediately tightened as preparations continued at the stadium.
Raila’s body arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 9:30 a.m. aboard a Kenya Airways flight from India. President Ruto, the Odinga family, and senior officials received the casket draped in the national flag before it was taken to Kasarani.
Despite the tragedy, thousands of Kenyans remained outside the stadium, determined to pay their last respects to the late opposition leader.
