Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), Eliud Lagat, made a surprise visit to Mwingi and Matuu Police Stations in Kitui and Machakos Counties.

According to an official statement from the National Police Service, Lagat visited the stations to evaluate the working conditions of officers in different areas.

During his inspection, Lagat commended the officers for their hard work, professionalism, and dedication to serving the public.

He went around various sections of the stations such as the Report Office, Children and Gender Office, Cells, Anti-Crime Unit, DCI Offices, Traffic Office, and Police Lines, interacting directly with the officers on duty.

The visit to the stations took place amidst heightened scrutiny on the DIG following the death of teacher and social media influencer Albert Ojwang in custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on June 7.

Lagat was linked to Ojwang’s case after the blogger allegedly made defamatory posts about him on social media, prompting Lagat to file a formal complaint against him.

Despite the allegations, Lagat denied playing any part in Ojwang’s arrest, abuse, or death.

After stepping down temporarily to allow for investigations, Lagat returned to his duties on July 14 following clearance of direct involvement by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

During his unexpected visit on Thursday, Lagat stressed the importance of mental health awareness, enhancing officers’ welfare, and upholding integrity within the police force.

He urged the officers to uphold high levels of discipline, teamwork, and professionalism while also showing compassion in their work.

In recent times, police stations have been under scrutiny due to cases of custodial deaths, leading to public protests and some stations being destroyed in retaliation.
