ODM member and ardent supporter Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has publicly revealed for the first time that she has been battling cancer for the past 12 years.
Speaking during the launch of a public health facility in Homa Bay on Thursday, August 28, 2026. Wanga emotionally recounted her journey, saying she remained strong despite seeing her family members struggle emotionally during her treatment.
The governor said Senator Beth Mugo once encouraged her not to allow fear and negative thoughts to control her. Wanga credited the advice, together with her faith and gratitude to God, for helping her remain mentally strong throughout the difficult period.
She said she was diagnosed while serving as a newly elected Member of Parliament and chose to focus on thanksgiving and access to treatment rather than fear.
Wanga also announced plans to introduce chemotherapy services in Homa Bay, followed by radiotherapy and other cancer treatment facilities. She said the goal is to ensure residents can access comprehensive cancer care locally instead of travelling outside the county for treatment.
