Kidney patients in Nyamira County could soon access dialysis services closer to home after Governor Amos Nyaribo announced plans to acquire 30 additional machines by January 2027.
The planned expansion is expected to strengthen specialised healthcare services and reduce pressure on Nyamira County Referral Hospital.
According to the governor’s earlier announcements, the additional machines will serve Nyamira County Referral Hospital, Masaba Level 4 Sub-County Hospital in Keroka and Ekerenyo Sub-County Hospital.
The expansion is intended to reduce the distance patients travel to access treatment, particularly those living far from the county referral facility.
In July 2026, Nyaribo commissioned 10 new dialysis machines at Nyamira County Referral Hospital. The county had previously operated three machines, bringing the total to 13 working machines after the commissioning.
The new equipment enabled the facility to conduct up to 26 dialysis sessions daily.
The governor also announced plans to establish renal units in sub-county hospitals to make treatment more accessible to residents.
According to the Government Advertising Agency, the planned distribution includes 10 machines for Nyamira County Referral Hospital, 10 for Keroka and another 10 for Ekerenyo.
The county government has also committed to purchasing additional dialysis supplies and employing more specialised medical personnel to support the expanding services.
The announcement comes as patients continue to face the financial and physical challenges associated with regular dialysis treatment.
Some patients previously travelled to Nairobi and other locations to obtain services, increasing their transport expenses and time away from home.
The additional machines could help reduce these difficulties while improving access to treatment within Nyamira.
However, the county will also need adequate medical staff, dialysis supplies and reliable maintenance to ensure the equipment remains operational.
If delivered within the announced January 2027 timeline, the expansion would represent another step in Nyamira’s efforts to strengthen specialised healthcare services.
Will the additional dialysis machines make a meaningful difference for kidney patients in Nyamira, especially those living far from the county referral hospital?
