A tragic road accident along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area has left several people feared dead and many others injured after a public service vehicle (PSV), popularly known as a “Nganya,” overturned late on Wednesday night.

The horrific crash occurred on June 3 opposite Nairobi Prison, sending shockwaves through motorists, pedestrians, and residents who witnessed the aftermath.

According to eyewitnesses, the matatu was allegedly being driven recklessly moments before the accident, with the driver reportedly performing dangerous stunts on the busy road.

Witnesses said the vehicle appeared to be speeding when the driver suddenly lost control.

The matatu then veered off the road before overturning, trapping passengers inside and pinning several people beneath the wreckage.

The impact caused panic and confusion as screams filled the air and bystanders rushed to the scene to help those trapped.

Preliminary reports indicate that at least six individuals who were allegedly hanging onto the outside of the vehicle at the time of the crash are feared to be among the victims.

However, authorities had not officially confirmed the exact number of fatalities by the time of publication.

Emergency response teams from the Kenya Red Cross Society arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and immediately launched rescue operations.

Volunteers and members of the public joined efforts to pull survivors from the wreckage while administering first aid to the injured before they were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that its emergency teams had been deployed to the scene.

“A mass casualty road traffic incident involving an overturned PSV has occurred along Enterprise Road in the Industrial Area, opposite Nairobi Prison.

Kenya Red Cross emergency response teams are on the scene providing first aid and evacuation support to those affected,” the organization said.

Videos and photos circulating online showed a heavily damaged vehicle lying on its side as rescuers worked tirelessly under floodlights to assist victims.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over road safety and the conduct of some matatu operators, particularly those associated with the highly decorated “Nganya” culture.
