The National Police Service (NPS) has expressed concern over the increasing number of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases, including femicide, affecting women and girls across country. In a statement issued on Saturday, May 23, the police said the growing trend of violence against women has become a major national concern that requires urgent attention and collective action from all sectors of society.
The service noted that despite the complex nature of femicide-related crimes, it has continued to strengthen investigations and improve operational strategies aimed at preventing and addressing such offences.
To enhance investigations, the DCI has established a specialized team made up of homicide investigators, forensic experts, intelligence analysts, and other professionals tasked with handling these sensitive cases.
According to preliminary findings, many of the reported incidents are linked to domestic conflicts, intimate partner violence, unresolved family disputes, assault, and sexual offences.
Police officials emphasized the need for stronger public awareness, community engagement, and preventive measures to address the root causes of gender-based violence.
NPS further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all citizens and ensuring those responsible for such crimes are brought to justice without fear or favour.Members of the public were encouraged to report incidents of violence promptly and cooperate with investigators by providing credible information that may assist ongoing investigations.
The police also highlighted the importance of collaboration with religious organizations, civil society groups, community leaders, and development partners in strengthening support systems for victims and survivors.
As concerns continue to rise over femicide and violence against women, the NPS maintained that it will continue enhancing its response mechanisms to ensure safety, accountability, and justice for affected individuals across the country.
