Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, a political ally of Kalonzo Musyoka, has said Oburu Odinga’s cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza administration could create an opportunity for the opposition to reorganise, strengthen its grassroots networks, and prepare more strategically for the 2027 General Election.
Kioni argued that the latest political developments should not necessarily be viewed as a setback for the opposition. Instead, he described them as an opportunity for opposition leaders to regroup, reassess their strategy, and build a stronger political movement ahead of the polls.
Speaking during an interview with Radio 47 on Tuesday evening, Kioni expressed confidence that Kenyans would soon witness a revitalised Azimio coalition led by younger, united, and determined leaders seeking to form the next government.
He said Azimio is currently working to rebuild its support base and position itself as a credible alternative to the Kenya Kwanza administration. Kioni also noted that major political realignments could occur before the 2027 elections.
The Jubilee official further stressed the importance of involving Generation Z in the political process, describing young Kenyans as an important force in shaping the country’s future. He said Azimio plans to incorporate their ideas, participation, and leadership as it seeks broader political and social change.
Kioni’s remarks came amid reports that Oburu Odinga had supported President William Ruto’s administration by backing the appointment of several ODM leaders to Cabinet positions.
The move sparked debate within opposition ranks, with some Azimio leaders opposing any form of cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government.
Critics argued that such cooperation could undermine the opposition’s role and conflict with some of the demands raised by Gen Z protesters, who opposed the Finance Bill and called for changes within the Cabinet during nationwide demonstrations.
The debate gained further attention after President Ruto nominated Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya, John Mbadi, and Opiyo Wandayi for Cabinet positions.
The nominations received mixed reactions from ODM officials and Azimio supporters. While some welcomed the appointments, others questioned whether the cooperation was consistent with the opposition’s earlier position and the concerns raised by young Kenyans during the protests.
