Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, a close ally of Kalonzo Musyoka, has argued that Oburu Odinga’s decision to cooperate with the Kenya Kwanza administration could provide the opposition with an opportunity to reorganize, strengthen its grassroots structures and develop a more effective strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Rather than viewing the recent political developments as a blow to the opposition, Kioni described them as a chance for opposition parties to regroup, evaluate their priorities and build a stronger political strategy before the elections.
Speaking during an interview with Radio 47 on Sunday evening, Kioni said Kenyans were likely to see a revitalized Azimio coalition led by younger, united and determined politicians focused on taking over government after the 2027 polls.
He explained that Azimio is currently working to rebuild its grassroots support and establish itself as a strong alternative to the Kenya Kwanza administration. He also suggested that significant political alliances and realignments could emerge as the country moves closer to the elections.
Kioni further emphasized the importance of bringing Generation Z into the political process, describing young Kenyans as a key force in determining the country’s future. He said Azimio intends to embrace their ideas, participation and leadership as part of its wider push for political and social change.
His comments followed reports that Oburu Odinga had supported President William Ruto’s administration by backing the appointment of several ODM politicians to Cabinet.
The decision triggered debate and divisions within opposition circles, with some Azimio leaders rejecting any cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government.
Opponents of the arrangement argued that collaboration with the administration could weaken the opposition’s position and contradict the concerns raised by Gen Z protesters, who opposed the Finance Bill and demanded changes within Cabinet during nationwide demonstrations.
The controversy intensified after President Ruto nominated Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya, John Mbadi and Opiyo Wandayi to Cabinet positions.
The nominations generated mixed reactions among ODM leaders and Azimio supporters. While some welcomed the appointments, others questioned whether the cooperation aligned with the opposition’s previous position and the demands expressed by young Kenyans during the protests.
