There was no show of mercy in court as a 74-year-old grandmother gave chilling details linking her own grandson to a brutal murder that happened on Christmas Day last year.
Julia Mwangi, testifying before Justice Patricia Gichohi, said her grandson, Bernard Ngugi, who worked for her as a house servant, allegedly killed a woman named Tabitha Wambui, a businesswoman from Ngomongo Village in Mawanga, Nakuru County.
Mwangi said that on December 25, 2024, while looking for Ngugi to help take her sick husband to the hospital, she found a bloody gunny bag in her kitchen, right next to the servant quarters. At first, she thought Ngugi had secretly slaughtered a goat, but after checking the goat pen and confirming all animals were safe, her fears grew stronger.
“I called a neighbour, and when we checked the bag, we saw human legs. That’s when I realised something terrible had happened,” she told the court.
Ngugi had reportedly placed the woman’s body in the bag and left it in the kitchen. Mwangi said Ngugi seemed drunk earlier that evening when he gave her milk, and he was shaking.
On December 26, she said Ngugi called her using another number, asking for money and saying he had done something serious. She didn’t send him any money, and the next day, he was arrested at Tumaini Centre.
Neighbour Munyuku Gichaga also testified, saying he saw the blood-stained bag and used a machete and torch to open it. Inside were the naked legs of a woman. Police were called, and the remains were taken away.
The case continues at the Milimani High Court, Nairobi.
