Popular Jacaranda Bunge la Mwananchi speaker Evans Onyango Kawala, better known as Kidero Jasuba, has publicly apologised following his arrest over remarks he made about President William Ruto and other leaders.
Speaking after his release, Jasuba acknowledged that his statements were inappropriate and said they were made in a moment of frustration. He explained that the comments, which quickly spread across social media, were not intended to be taken as actual threats.
The controversy erupted after a video resurfaced showing the outspoken orator sharply criticising the government during a public discussion. In the clip, he made remarks that authorities considered dangerous and inflammatory, prompting detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to intervene.
Jasuba revealed that he initially thought the individuals who approached him were criminals because they did not immediately identify themselves. He said the encounter quickly escalated before he realised they were law enforcement officers acting on instructions related to the viral video.
While recounting his experience, the content creator admitted that part of his motivation was to gain online visibility. According to him, social media engagement plays a major role in supporting his livelihood and that of his family.
He also clarified that he never had any intention or ability to harm the leaders he mentioned in his remarks. Instead, he described the statements as emotional outbursts fueled by the frustrations many Kenyans are currently facing.
Jasuba further noted that investigators played back the viral clip during questioning, giving him an opportunity to reflect on the impact of his words. He said the officers advised him to engage in responsible political discourse that informs the public without crossing legal boundaries.
As debate over freedom of expression and responsible speech continues online, Jasuba has urged his supporters and fellow Kenyans to accept his apology, saying he has learned an important lesson from the incident.
