A 23-year-old Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student, Martha Atieno, has been arrested after confessing to a chilling incident involving the death and disposal of her newborn.
Atieno’s emotional video confession has since gone viral, shedding light on the heartbreaking sequence of events.
Atieno revealed she gave birth alone, cut the umbilical cord herself, and initially left the baby at home in the care of a man.
Upon her return, she found the infant unwell—describing the child as pale and breathing heavily. She claimed she was preparing to take the baby to the hospital when the newborn passed away in her arms.
In a desperate move, Atieno left for school to sit an exam that same morning, leaving the deceased baby in the house.
On returning, overwhelmed and alone, she made the decision to dispose of the baby’s body in a pit latrine near her home.
Her neighbour, who had seen her earlier, helped piece together the events and reported the matter.
The incident has sparked widespread conversation online about mental health, pressure on students, and the support systems available for young mothers.
Police have since taken Atieno into custody as investigations continue.
