A congratulatory billboard celebrating the launch of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) was vandalized in Nairobi on Saturday, stirring political tension and online debate.
The billboard, which had been erected to mark the birth of the new party led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was found destroyed just days after its installation. It bore a message of support for Gachagua, featuring his image alongside DCP co-founder Irungu Nyakera.
Images shared online showed the billboard in ruins—twisted metal and torn fabric replaced what was once a bold public display.
Nyakera, visibly frustrated, took to social media to express dismay. He suggested the act was politically motivated, alluding to rising hostility from rival quarters in Nairobi.
The incident comes just two days after DCP’s official launch on May 15. The party has adopted neon green, brown, and white as its colors, with the slogan “Skiza Wakenya.” Its logo features an ear cupped by fingers, symbolizing attentiveness to citizen voices.
The party leadership is stacked with familiar names. Gachagua is the party leader, with Cleophas Malala serving as interim deputy. Mithika Linturi has taken on the role of National Organising Secretary, while Cate Waruguru and Maina Kamanda take charge of the women’s wing and elder council, respectively.
Other key figures include David Mingati as National Chairperson and Hezron Obanga as Secretary General.
DCP has already branded its party offices and trucks across Nairobi, indicating clear intent to compete nationally.
