Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdullahi has urged Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to consider stepping down voluntarily as President William Ruto’s running mate before the 2027 General Election, arguing that such a move would give the Kenya Kwanza coalition adequate time to review and strengthen its electoral strategy.
In a statement posted on his X account, Ahmednassir clarified that he does not expect President Ruto to remove Kindiki from the presidential ticket. Instead, he maintained that the Deputy President should make the decision himself if the ruling coalition is to maximize its chances of retaining power in the next general election.
The senior lawyer suggested that any decision regarding the running mate should be finalized before October 2026. According to him, making an early decision would provide Kenya Kwanza with enough time to reorganize its campaign, rebuild political alliances and reinforce support in areas where the coalition may have experienced declining popularity.
Ahmednassir argued that retaining the current ticket without reviewing its political implications could pose challenges to President Ruto’s re-election efforts. He linked his remarks to recent political developments that have raised questions about the ruling coalition’s influence in some regions.
His comments came after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lost the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, a result that drew significant national attention because the constituency is located in the politically significant Mt Kenya region, which played a major role in President Ruto’s victory during the 2022 General Election.
According to Ahmednassir, the by-election outcome should serve as a wake-up call for Kenya Kwanza to reassess its political approach, leadership structure and voter mobilization strategy ahead of the 2027 polls. He expressed confidence that the coalition still has enough time to make strategic adjustments before election campaigns intensify.
At the time of publication, neither President William Ruto nor Deputy President Kithure Kindiki had publicly responded to Ahmednassir’s remarks. However, the proposal is expected to fuel further political debate over Kenya Kwanza’s presidential ticket and its preparations for the next general election.
