It is now three weeks since a troop of police drawn from various police departments was sent to the North rift to restore peace and calm. The attacks conducted by the police has resulted to bombing made in the forest hideouts and other places with deep thickets. This has resulted to counter attacks where many lives have been lost while properties are being destroyed in large scale.
Several political and religious learders have joint forces with the police in calling for peace restoration. However, a new development indicate how Pokot elders and women are using traditional charm to protects their sons in the battlefield against the police. The women are identified to tie a round belt known as Leketio which is perceived to have powers to guard the fighters.
This is dragging the peace finding process as the elders are known to be powerful and rarely get it wrong when they predict the outcome of an action. This promotes banditry which only benefits a few people while creating bloodshed, poverty and misery to those raided.
The elders need to be educated on the need for peace and cohesion which brings good neighborhood with other communities. Empowering the communities through education will also help solve the challenges which result to the banditry acts.
