Jackson Kihara Gachagua, the son of the late Nderitu Gachagua, is expected to appear before Justice Alexander Muteti as he seeks to overturn a 20-year prison sentence handed to him following a robbery with violence conviction in 2019.
Kihara is currently serving his sentence at Manyani Maximum Security Prison after a court found him guilty in a case that attracted significant public attention due to his family background and political connections.
The appeal hearing is expected to revisit the circumstances surrounding the conviction, with Kihara’s legal team seeking to challenge both the ruling and the severity of the punishment imposed by the trial court. His lawyers are reportedly expected to argue that there were inconsistencies in the evidence presented during the initial proceedings.
The robbery with violence charge, which carries one of the harshest penalties under Kenyan law, resulted in Kihara receiving a lengthy jail term after the court determined that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The matter has continued to generate public interest over the years, especially because Kihara is linked to the influential Gachagua family. His late father, Nderitu Gachagua, was a prominent businessman and political figure whose legacy remains well known in Central Kenya politics.
Justice Alexander Muteti is expected to hear submissions from both the defence and the prosecution before determining whether the conviction and sentence should be upheld, reduced, or overturned altogether.
The appeal outcome could mark a significant turning point in the long-running legal battle that has kept Jackson Kihara Gachagua behind bars for several years.
