Kenya’s political scene has been heating up as rallies and processions continue to attract large crowds. The return of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has now sparked fresh debate after clashes broke out at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Rowdy youths clashed with Gachagua’s supporters on Thursday morning near the airport’s exit junction. The group hurled stones at those who had gathered to welcome the politician back from his United States trip.

Police officers who were on standby moved quickly to control the situation. Anti riot units were deployed to disperse the attackers and restore calm in the area.

By midday, order had been restored and security teams maintained a tight perimeter around the airport. Several vehicles were damaged but no major injuries were reported during the confrontation.

Kenyans have reacted strongly to the incident on social media. Many expressed disappointment saying that before the event there had been peace and that the clashes only brought unnecessary tension.

Others condemned the attack and urged politicians to guide their supporters responsibly. A section of citizens also questioned why gatherings are increasingly turning chaotic during high profile political arrivals.

Interior officials explained that the heavy security deployment was part of wider measures to prevent escalation. Water cannons and General Service Unit officers were among the teams mobilised to deal with any further unrest.

Despite the standoff, Gachagua’s allies went ahead with plans to lead a procession to Kamukunji Grounds later in the day. Authorities warned that any repeat of violence would result in legal action against those involved.

The incident has once again stirred the volatile atmosphere surrounding political rallies in the country. As 2027 draws closer, Kenyans continue to call for peaceful engagements in place of confrontations.
