CCTV footage reviewed by Nation has shed light on the final hours of Mercy Wanjiru Kimani, a 23-year-old woman who later died after sustaining severe injuries under unclear circumstances.
The footage captures Mercy spending time with friends inside a nightclub along Mombasa Road in Nairobi during what was meant to be a birthday celebration. She is seen appearing relaxed, mostly focused on her phone while interacting with those around her.
At one point, she steps outside and engages in a brief conversation with a bodaboda rider.
The rider is later seen leaving to pick up another passenger, leaving Mercy at the location.
According to her family, Mercy had attended church earlier that day before being invited by a friend to the evening celebration.
What seemed like a normal social outing quickly turned tragic when she did not return home.Hours after she was last seen, Mercy was discovered unconscious about three kilometres from the nightclub.
She had suffered a deep head injury, abdominal wounds and multiple fractures on both arms.
She was first taken to a dispensary in Mukuru before being referred to Thika Level 4 Hospital, where she remained in intensive care.
Her mother, Zipporah Kimani, said Mercy spent over three months in hospital as her condition fluctuated between slight recovery and critical decline before she died on April 23.
Her sister, Caroline Wanjiku, said the family did not observe signs of intoxication in the CCTV footage and described Mercy as calm throughout the evening.
She added that Mercy appeared preoccupied with her phone, a habit common among young people.
The family says there remains a significant gap between the time Mercy was last seen at the club and when she was found injured, and they believe answers lie in that missing period.
They are now calling for a thorough investigation and justice for her death.
