A Nairobi student who went viral for flying home in Kenya Airways Business Class after his KCSE exams has made his family proud by scoring an A- and is now set to pursue a career in aviation.
Rodney Mongare, a candidate from Nyambaria High School, captured national attention when he flew home in style after completing his KCSE exams. The teenager’s impressive A- grade confirms that his ambition matches his flair, opening the door for his dream of becoming a pilot.
Rodney is now preparing to join Zino Aviation in South Africa, where he will work toward a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and take the first steps toward a professional career in aviation.
Behind Rodney’s success is his mother, Ruth Kemunto, whose unwavering support has been instrumental in nurturing his dream. For four years, she has flown him to and from school in Business Class every term, an unusual but intentional gesture meant to inspire him to dream big.
Ruth explained that these trips were not just about comfort but about exposing Rodney to the world of aviation firsthand. From interacting with KQ captains and cabin crew to observing aircraft operations up close, Rodney had a front-row seat to the profession he aspires to join.
“I always told him to work hard so he could get into a national school and even aspire to be a school captain,” Ruth shared. Beyond academics, the trips also served as a family bonding experience, transforming routine travel into a reward for discipline and dedication.
With his KCSE results now out, Rodney is set to travel to South Africa to pursue his aviation studies. His mother hopes he will not only excel abroad but eventually return to Kenya as a fully trained pilot, ready to soar in his chosen career.
Rodney’s journey is a testament to how parental belief, exposure, and motivation can help a child reach remarkable heights—literally and figuratively.
Kenyans have been quick to celebrate Rodney’s success. One user remarked, “I like this. May he receive favour in life. Brilliant guys are fragile, let’s take care of them.” Others expressed admiration for Ruth’s dedication in shaping her son’s future.
From viral fame to academic excellence, Rodney Mongare’s story is proof that ambition, guidance, and opportunity can take a student from a classroom to the cockpit.
