A matatu driver left traffic police officers and other motorists stunned after refusing to open his doors during a confrontation and driving over road barricades to escape.
The dramatic incident, captured in a video that circulated online, occurred along a road experiencing heavy traffic, drawing the attention of passengers and motorists caught in the jam.
The footage showed approximately five officers, including uniformed police and others wearing reflector jackets marked “Usalama Barabarani”, surrounding the matatu in an attempt to stop the driver.
However, the driver reportedly locked the vehicle’s doors and refused to step out despite the officers’ efforts to engage him.
With the matatu remaining stationary, the officers appeared to attempt deflating its tyres to prevent it from moving. When that approach failed to bring the standoff to an end, they placed road barricades in front of and behind the vehicle.
The barriers appeared to leave the matatu boxed in, while passengers watched the confrontation through the windows.
Other motorists, who were also caught in the traffic jam, followed the unfolding drama, with some heard commenting on the officers’ attempts to stop the vehicle.
Despite the obstacles, the driver did not surrender. As traffic ahead began to clear, he suddenly accelerated, driving the matatu over the barricades before speeding away from the scene.
The unexpected move appeared to catch the officers off guard, leaving them behind as the vehicle escaped.
The video sparked attention online because of the driver’s determination to avoid the officers and the unusual manner in which he overcame the barriers they had placed around the matatu.
The circumstances that led to the confrontation were not clearly established in the footage, and it was not immediately clear whether the driver was subsequently traced or faced any charges.
The incident also raised questions about road safety, particularly the risks associated with confrontations involving public service vehicles carrying passengers.
Matatus remain a major means of transport in Kenya, making compliance with traffic regulations and the lawful handling of roadside enforcement encounters important for the safety of passengers and other road users.
