Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces, joined the global community in commemorating World Autism Day 2025 under the theme “Advancing Neurodiversity.”The event aimed to promote autism awareness and foster inclusivity across Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Nakuru.
In Nairobi, the commemoration took place at the Defence Forces Wellness Centre in Lang’ata Garrison, where MWAK Chairperson, Grace Kahariri, presided over the event.
She flagged off a processional march to raise autism awareness and advocate for the rights of individuals with autism.
In her address, Kahariri highlighted the significance of World Autism Day as a platform to educate the public, celebrate neurodivergent individuals, and advocate for their inclusion.
She reaffirmed MWAK’s commitment to supporting KDF families affected by autism, emphasizing ongoing initiatives such as the refurbishment and equipping of schools and hospitals to enhance services for children with special needs.
She particularly noted the renovation of the Kahawa Special Needs Unit and the plan to replicate similar efforts nationwide.Additionally, MWAK is collaborating with DEFTEC and the Family Group Foundation to develop a curriculum equipping special needs children with essential life skills.
The Chairperson extended her appreciation to Family Group Foundation, Kingdom Bank, DEFTEC, DEFWES, KISE, and BethanyKids for their invaluable support.
Commandant Col. P. K. Tirop echoed these sentiments, commending MWAK and its partners for their dedication.
Representatives from the Directorate of Medical Services (DMS) also highlighted advancements in autism care, including speech therapy expansion, occupational therapy, and caregiver psychological support.
