Authorities have disclosed potential reasons behind Philip Mutinda’s decision to turn himself in as the primary suspect in the death of Multimedia University student Sylvia Kemunto.

Mutinda, a first-year engineering student and Kemunto’s boyfriend, voluntarily presented himself at the Sultan Hamud Police Station in Makueni County, which is quite a distance from the university.

According to reports, he was accompanied by his parents, who had confronted him regarding the murder before opting to take him to the police.

Her mother, concerned by the lack of communication, visited the campus only to discover that her daughter had not been seen for several days.

A missing persons report was subsequently filed at Lang’ata Police Station.

Preliminary investigations indicated that Kemunto was last observed in her hostel room.

Witnesses reported seeing Mutinda transporting Kemunto’s suitcase from her room to his own.

His roommate later mentioned having seen the suitcase, but it vanished the following day.

Days after her disappearance, her body was discovered in a rooftop water tank at the university, with police led to the location by a foul odor.

Mutinda, who had previously been questioned by detectives, reportedly fled the campus during the interrogation.

Friends noted that he appeared anxious when law enforcement began to focus their attention on him.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has since taken over the case and moved Mutinda to Nairobi for further inquiry.

As detectives work to reconstruct the timeline and gather evidence, uncertainties linger regarding Mutinda’s actions and the possible involvement of others in the crime.
