Cs Murkomen

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is facing backlash over his recent remarks on youth and mental health. During a church service at AIC Makutano, he claimed that many young people posting “hateful messages” on social media suffer from mental illnesses caused by drug and alcohol abuse.

His comments have sparked outrage from human rights groups, mental health advocates, and lobby organizations. Inuka Kenya ni Sisi, a group championing civic wellness, has condemned his statement and demanded an apology.

In a statement signed by its CEO, Kawive Wambua, the lobby group accused Murkomen of worsening the stigma around mental health. They argued that his words could discourage people from seeking help and undo the progress made in mental health awareness.

The group urged Murkomen to take responsibility and apologize to young people struggling with mental health conditions. They also called on the government to increase the mental health budget, which currently stands at just 0.04% of the total health budget.

According to the Kenya Mental Health Policy (2015-2030), 25% of outpatients and 40% of inpatients in hospitals suffer from mental illness. Experts say the government has not invested enough in mental health facilities, leading to a shortage of resources, specialists, and treatment options.

The lobby group demanded that Murkomen push for better mental health policies instead of making statements that stigmatize those struggling. They also want the government to fund more mental health awareness programs and improve access to care.

Murkomen has yet to respond to the demands. His remarks have fueled debates on how the government views youth activism and whether it is addressing mental health issues effectively.

This controversy has also drawn attention to the increasing calls for better mental health services in Kenya. Many believe that government leaders should advocate for solutions rather than making statements that worsen the stigma.

As pressure mounts on Murkomen, it remains to be seen whether he will issue an apology or stand by his remarks. The debate on youth activism and mental health continues to be a hot topic in the country.
