Attacks carried out by militias from the area, the Mayi-Mayi Malaka, target civilians in the province of Maniema in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since January 20, films that have been shared on social media show these militants lashing young girls, women, and men in the Salamabila district. They reportedly chastised these women for sporting too-short skirts, according to witnesses.
Four films in total show militiamen beating and stripping young girls and women while pulling them to the ground and arming them with sticks. A man is shown being held down on the ground and then being beaten in a video.
Some Kenyans however confused the video as to have originated in Kenyan and it had already escalated mixed reactions where some had tagged the DCI asking it to take action.
